I have over fifteen years of experience as a scientist with several large agricultural and chemical companies. Throughout my career, I have always been responsible for training contract and full-time employees that range from high school students during the summer to interns to recent college and grad school graduates. It’s important for students and employees to learn the ‘whys’ as well as the ‘hows’. I discovered a long time ago that both students and employees retain much more of the knowledge needed for a subject or job if the topics are explained using a variety of methods (visual, verbal, demonstration for example) and if they understand ‘why’.
I learned this approach in college when I was a tutor on campus. I received 2yrs of training in different learning methods in our tutoring facility, and they proved to be extremely useful. In college, I tutored lower and upper level math courses, English, Russian, Chemistry, and Biology.
